The Mirror of God’s Word Strengthens Your Self-Image

By Michael Christian

God challenges us to believe we are what His Word declares us to be. As God’s people, we are radically changed when we meditate in God’s Word. (Romans 12:2) The new thoughts of God’s Word  replace the old, worldly thoughts upon which we once acted. Our behavior changes when our actions are based on the truth that God loves and accepts us.

Most of us suffer or have suffered from low self-esteem, having allowed ourselves to be defined by the negative things others said about us. But who we are is not determined by man, whether parents, teachers, spouses, ex-spouses, or so-called friends, but by our Heavenly Father. Many assume God’s Word is judgmental and condemning toward imperfect people.

Actually, His thoughts toward us are higher and better than our thoughts about ourselves, because He sees us as new creations in Christ. He sees us with a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11-13) As we dare to believe God’s Word, our minds are renewed, our behavior changes, we are liberated from the past, and we see ourselves as Sons and Daughters of God, equipped and empowered to serve Him.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Lord the Spirit. —2 Corinthians 3:18

God’s Word is like a mirror. When we read it, it reads us. It shows us who we are. But more than that, it reflects back the glory of Jesus and who we will become as we are changed into his image.

We become what we worship. As we view Jesus in the Word, we are transformed to be like Him. As we are what we eat physically, we are what we eat spiritually. By meditating in God’s Word daily, we are changed into the image of Christ. You grow spiritually as you feed on these truths. (If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, click here.)
