Prayer to Overcome Personal Anger
Lord Jesus, grant me the spirit of grace and self-control when others offend me or do me wrong. By a gentle answer I turn away wrath, my own and other’s. I will respond gently when I am frustrated by the actions and attitudes of others. As I have received Your forgiveness, I choose in advance to forgive those who may offend me. If need be, I will walk away from potential conflict until my adrenaline has subsided and my emotions are under control. I will sleep on the situation before reacting in haste. I will be slow to anger, self-controlled, and not let the sun go down on my wrath. Thank You for giving me victory over my temper, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Scripture Affirmations
When I am angry, I will not sin: I will not let the sun go down on my wrath, nor give place to the devil. (Ephesians 4:26-27)
I will be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. (James 1:19)
When Jesus spoke, He spoke to me, saying: “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.” Therefore I crucify thoughts of anger, name-calling, hatred, and murder, that I may be an obedient disciple and blessed in my ways. (Matthew 5:21-22)
When I am slow to anger, I am better (stronger) than the mighty. Because I control myself, I am better than he who takes a city. (Proverbs 16:32)
When I speak softly, I turn away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)
If I say I am in the light and hate my brother, I am in darkness until now. When I love my brother, I abide in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in me. But when I hate my brother, I am in darkness and walk in darkness, and do not know where I am going, because the darkness has blinded my eyes. (1 John 2:9-11)
I choose to walk in the wisdom that is from above, which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. I choose to sow the fruit of righteousness in peace, as one who makes peace. (James 3:17–18)
Where possible, as much as it depends on me, I will live peaceably with all men. (Romans 12:18)
